The Mayan Council (Alcaldía Maya) - El Quiché, Guatemala

The Mayan Council works within a small municipality located in the department of El Quiché, Guatemala to empower the municipality's indigenous population through educational workshops, conflict-resolution services and cultural activities.  Furthermore, they work to preserve the incredibly rich Mayan culture that unfortunately is dying out due to racism and discrimination.

On April 20th, 2012 the Mayan Council along with the help of Peace Corps, USAID, Cementos Progreso, Megamart Supermarket, GCC and many other amazing individuals, built the country's first Mayan Educational Center made with eco-bricks (plastic bottles filled with inorganic trash). The Center features meeting spaces to hold workshops and classes, a bilingual library, and office space for the Mayan Council to provide its conflict resolution services to the people.  Our goal is that through education we can combat the discrimination against Mayan populations while also giving them the tools and knowledge they need to be empowered.
